How To Get HDTV Programming For Your Home

OK, so you have your brand new HDTV or are seriously thinking about getting one soon. That’s a great decision because this new television technology is going to quickly become the standard for broadcasting television signals. In fact by 2007 all television broadcasting will have switched over to digital format under the direction of the FCC, and that paves the way for high definition television to become the accepted norm.

So how do you actually get the HDTV signal then? Well, there are different ways to do that and the best decision for you probably depends most on where you live. If you live in close proximity to television stations that broadcast HDTV programming then all you will need is a television that already has a HDTV tuner built in to be able to receive and display high definition broadcasts, and a suitable antenna. However, you will be limited to receiving only a small group of local stations.

For most people, the best solution is to become a subscriber to either a cable TV or satellite service, because they offer many more channels of entertainment and news that broadcast in HDTV. To receive the signal from these providers you only need to have a television set that is HDTV “capable”, or in other words, all that is needed to process high definition programming is an external receiver or tuner. Just like the ones provided by cable and satellite companies.

The other advantage of having the HDTV capable television set is that as the technology improves, you can simply upgrade the receiver as your programing provider makes the new tuners available, usually at very little or even no cost since you continue to use their service.

You can also use cable or satellite service if you have the HDTV tuner already installed inside your TV, but why pay for the tuner if you get the same thing from your programming provider instead?

So in summary, you can get HDTV programming either by antenna through local TV broadcasts, or broaden your channel selection and HDTV choices through either a satellite or cable TV company.

Things You Need To Know Before You Buy Your HDTV

If you are in the market for a HDTV you probably are somewhat confused by all of the terminology used in the industry, but actually it doesn’t take too long to learn your way around, and be an educated television consumer.

When looking for a HDTV, you will no doubt run into a couple of terms that you will need to understand very well. You will see a TV labeled as “HDTV Enabled”, and then you may see others labeled “HDTV Ready” or “HDTV Integrated”. There is not usually much difference between the “Ready” set and the “Integrated” set. They both are ways of saying that the TV has a HDTV tuner already installed in it and is capable of receiving and displaying high definition broadcasts right away with just an antenna.

The “Enabled” sets on the other hand do not have the tuner built into the TV and so must rely on an external receiver or tuner to be able to receive and display high definition programming. What does this mean for you? Well, if you mainly tune into local broadcasts using an antenna, you probably want the tuner already built into the TV. On the other hand, if you are a cable or satellite subscriber, which many viewers are, you can just buy the set that doesn’t have the tuner built in and use the one provided by your programming provider instead.

As far as audio is concerned, the HDTV standard includes the capability to present sound in Dolby 5.1 surround sound format. If you plan on taking full advantage of that with a surround sound system you will need plenty of connectors on the TV to get the job done, so look carefully on the back and see how many connectors are provided and then match that up with the speaker system that you plan to buy. Basically, the more connector ports you can get, the better.

If you like to play video games, you will certainly enjoy the enhanced capabilities of high definition since it will also enhance all games played on Playstation 3, and Xbox 360. So check to make sure that there are appropriate connectors on the front or rear of the TV to enable you to connect up your video game system too.

And don’t forget the surge protector. It would really be a shame to get all of this great television equipment and then damage it due to an unexpected electrical surge. It’s actually cheap insurance for your HDTV.

This year alone sales of HDTVs is expected to reach 20 million. In fact, HDTV sales is on track to post a one week record shortly before the Super Bowl, as fans to want to enjoy the big game in all of its high-definition glory. Important Date To Remember In Television Broadcasting

HDTV is knocking at our entranceway and you’ll have to let it in! Will you be in the dark Feb 17, 2009? Better read on! March 1, 2007: Any component that has an analog TV receiver must also allow a digital tuner.

February 17, 2009: A governance authorization requires that all full-power TV stations stop broadcasting analog signals and shift to 100% digital broadcasting by THIS DATE!!! This shift will primarily alter nearly 15-20 million TV viewers who rely on localised over-the-air broadcasts received via antenna.

Viewers who donate to cable or satellite TV shouldn’t experiencesee any disruption in those services. If needed, your Cable or Dish provider will supply a digital set-top box that will work with your TV.

For continuing broadcasting after the 2009 cutoff, all of you out there with your old-fashioned TVs (analog-only tuners) will need to be attached to a digital-to-analog device box, or replaced by a new HDTV with a built-in digital tuner. As of now these device boxes will sell for between $50 and $70.

These will be obtainable to the public very soon! If you opt out for the “stand alone” converter box don’t be fooled that you will have a high definition signal, you will be receiving a digital signal alright but like the boxes title, it’s converting it back to analog!

Also if you currently subscribe to DIRECTV or DISH, your HD satellite receiver will most likely include an over-the-air HD tuner to get your localised HDTV stations. Let me add something to this though… most all your Cable and Satellite companies will charge you more (usually around $10/month more) to get your localized High def signals via there receiver!

If you choose this way and your ok with $10 fee your prompt to go! Your otherwise choice?… Buy your own over-the-air (OTA) HDTV antenna and pocket the $120/year! The antenna is cheap and actually you will get a sharper picture than via your cable or Dish provider’s box!

How?… When you get your Hi def signal via your own hd antenna your are getting a (pure) 100% digital uncompressed signal! Receiving your signal through a Dish/Cable provider causes the HD signal to get compressed (squeezed smaller) in order for your provider to transmit along with all the other channels their providing you!

Hdtv is quickly coming but it’s ok. Having the noesis of the options you possess to decide upon will make it effortless to open the door!
